Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.

“Memories of Figure Names (4) / Rudolph Fallaway”
“Does this figure name have anything to do with the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer?” – this is what I thought when I first heard this figure name.
The answer was in the book “THE PHYLLIS HAYLOR AND BALLROOM DNACING”(p.142);-
The Rudolph Fallaway is popular in all four dances; we have chosen to make it the highlight of a simple Quickstep group. For the more advanced dancer, the Ronde for the lady could be taken with the leg lifted slightly off the floor.
The name, of course, comes from film star Rudolph Valentino (whose Four Horsemen was recently shown again in London). It has nothing to do with the ballet star Rudolf Nureyev!
For me, a lovely memory of finding it has nothing to do with the reindeer.

“The Rudolf Fallaway was introduced by Henry Kingston, who was as many of my era will know was a wonderful coach, choreographer and the inventor of many figures being danced today.” (2022/03/19)
「フィガー名の思い出（４）／ルドルフ・フォーラウェイ」
このフィガー名を初めて聞いたとき、「ロンデとどう違うのだろう」、「ルドルフって赤鼻のトナカイと関係あるのだろうか」などと思ったものでした。そんな疑問を解決してくれたのが”THE WORLD OF PHYLLIS HAYLOR AND BALLROOM DANCING” (Edited by Bryan Allen, printed by W. H. Houldershaw Ltd)の本にこう書かれていました（P142）。
「ルドルフ・フォーラウェイは4種目でよく使われます。（この本では）クイックステップのシンプルなグループのハイライトとなるようにしました。上級者の女性はロンデで脚を床から少し持ち上げて行うこともできます。（ルドルフの）名前は当然、映画俳優のルドルフ・バレンチーノ（彼の映画「黙示録の四騎士」は最近ロンドンで再上映されました）から付けられました。バレエのスター、ルドルフ・ヌレエフ（Rudolf Nureyev）とはなんら関係ありませんよ！」
調べてみるとルドルフ・バレンチーノ（Rudolph Valentino 1895-1926）はイタリア生まれの映画男優で、「グレート・ラテン・ラバー」のニックネームを持っていました。彼が主演の映画「黙示録の四騎士（The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse、1921年作）」の中に酒場でタンゴを踊る場面があり、そこでこのロンデをさせるシーンが見られます。
「赤鼻のトナカイ」と何ら関係がないこと、ルドルフ・フォーラウェイはルドルフ・ロンデとか単にルドルフなどとも言うことを知った、楽しい思い出です。
