Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.

“Memories of Figure Names No.27 Fregolina and Farol “
When I looked up the meanings of Fregolina and Farol (Paso Doble figures), it was quite easily found that both are Spanish, with Fregolina meaning “mop” and Farol meaning “lantern”.
The booklet “A CONSICE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICAN DANCING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM (COMPILED BY IRENE EVANS)” writes, Fregolina is “The cape being whipped quickly behind the Torrero”, and Farol is “Now incorporated in the last named figure”.
So far so good, but I still could not get the connections between the movement and Spanish meaning of them.
In 2015, a friend of mine taught me to what he looked up in relevant Wikipedia. He is a native Spanish speaker and also speaks English and Japanese.
The first Wikipedia is on the matador Ricardo Romero Freg, where it says
“His name has been constantly linked to the history of bullfighting by a cape pass he invented(fregolina alias orteguina).”
It is imagined that Fregolina was given from how to use the cape resembles the movement of the mop.
By the way, I am now wondering if there is no possibility that Fregorina came from “Freg + gorina”, just like the Fleckerl “Fleck + erl(diminutive)” .
The other Wikipedia is on the bullfighter Manuel Domínguez, which writes
“In the world of bullfighting, the farol (from the Spanish lantern) is a cape pass that the bullfighter performs by raising the cape above his head. He can also do it on his knees, or with only one knee on the ground.
The first to have executed it would be Manuel Domínguez who presented it for the first time in Madrid on May 13 , 1855″
I now think it was named because the shape of the cape resembles the light of a street lantern that spreads and falls to the ground.

「フィガー名の思い出27 フレゴリーナとファロル (Fregolina and Farol)」
パソ・ドブレのフィガーのフレゴリーナとファロルを調べるとどちらもスペイン語で、フレゴリーナは「モップ」、ファロルは「ランタン、灯籠」とすぐに分りました。また、小冊子「A CONSICE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICAN DANCING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM (COMPILED BY IRENE EVANS)」には、フレゴリーナは「闘牛士の背中で素早く翻るケープ」、そしてファロルは「（テキストの）最後に取り入れられたネームド・フィガー」と書かれています。
そこまでは良いのですが、フィガー名の意味と踊りとの関連性が長い間理解できずにいました。すると2015年になって一人の友人がウィキペディアで調べた二人の闘牛士のことを教えてくれました。彼はスペイン語を母国語とし、英語、日本語も使います。
最初のはリカルド・ロメオ・フレグ（Ricardo Romero Freg）のウィキペディアで、そこには、
闘牛の世界におけるフレゴリーナはケープパス（passe de cape / cape pass）の動きで、メキシコの闘牛士リカルド・ロメオ・フレグ（Ricardo Romero Freg ）により、1926年に考案されました。
とあります。ケープの使い方がモップの動きに似ている所からこの名が付いたと想像されます。
因みに私は、ヴィニーズ・ワルツのフレッカールが「Fleck＋erl(接辞)」であるように、フレゴリーナが闘牛士の名前「Freg＋orina」の可能性はないのだろうかと想像しています。
もう一つはファロルに関するのウィキペディアで、
闘牛の世界のファロルは、闘牛士がケープを頭上に上げて行うケープパス。両膝、または片膝だけを地面に着いて行うこともできます。ファロルが闘牛で最初に使われたのは1855年5月13日マドリードにて、闘牛士のマニュエル・ドミンゲス（Manuel Domínguez）による。
と出ています。
ファロルはスペイン語の「ランタン」ですが、闘牛でのケープの形が、街灯の灯りが地面に広がり落ちる様に似ている所からつけられたのではないかと想像しています。
