Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.

“Memories of Figure Names No.30 Progressive Side Step”
I was very pleased when I learned that the Progressive Link was born from the Progressive Side Step. In the material I bought around 1995, Ken Akrill says as following:
” Originally a standardized variation of the Progressive Side Step. It is now considered to be a basic figure of the Tango. It contains two steps and occupies half a bar of music. Became more popular when the staccato action was introduced. Previous to this the Promenade was invariably entered from a Right foot walk turning the lady to Promenade Position.”
Indeed, if you looked up Promenade Figures as as Closed Promenade or Natural Twist turn in Tango textbook, you will find in the Precedes “Walk on RF turned to PP”. I don’t think anyone uses this way of entering nowadays, but it feels surprisingly fresh when used in circle activities.
In the clip I attach here, you will see very typical Tango movement following Chase of Massimo & Alessandra. Although Massimo explains it as “two checks” in the video I think this move is exactly what PSS is all about. And I am delighted that the World Top Dancers took up PSS which seems to be disappearing.

「フィガー名の思い出30 プログレッシブ・サイド・ステップ」
プログレッシブ・サイド・ステップからプログレッシブ・リンクが生まれたことを知ったときはとても嬉しく思いました。1995年頃に購入したケン・アクリル氏の資料の中に次のように書かれています。
「もともとはプログレッシブ・サイドステップのバリエーションとして標準化されたものです。現在ではタンゴの基本形とされ、2歩構成で音楽の半小節を占めます。スタッカート・アクションが導入されると、よりポピュラーになりました。それ以前は必ず右足ウォークから入り、女性をプロムナード・ポジションに回転さていました。」
確かに、タンゴのテキストを開くと、クローズド・プロムナードやナチュラル・ツイスト・ターンのようなプロムナード系フィガーの先行には、「右足ウォークでPPに」が含まれています。この入り方は今では誰も使っていない気がしますが、サークル活動で使ってみると意外と新鮮な感じがすると思います。
ここに添付する動画のマッシモ＆アレッサンドラがチェイスから続けるこの動きはとてもで魅力的です。マッシモはビデオの中で「チェックを2回」と説明していますが、この動きはまさにPSSそのもの。世界のトップ･ダンサーが消えつつあると思えるPSSを取り上げたことに喜びを感じます。
