Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.

“Memories of Figure Names No.25 Fleckerl”
I haven’t danced Vinnie’s Waltz in our circle or personally since I started ballroom dancing, but I’ve still wanted to know what “Fleckerl” means. What I found unexpectedly early was that Fleck means “spot, small thing” in German.
Decades later, “THE IRVINE LEGACY” (Oliver Wessel-Therhorn)published by DSI in the UK in 2009 also writes,
“The name Fleckerl comes from the German word Fleck which means spot; so this figure must be danced on the spot.”
I imagine English-speaking and German-speaking people would accept that explanation as a given. But I could not accept it because it is the explanation of “Freck” and NOT “Fleckerl”. So my investigation went on.
I think it’s over 20 years later since my investigation started, when one day I found a website of an Austrian restaurant by chance, I learned for the first time there was a kind of spaghetti called “Fleckerl”. And the website explained it is so called because it’s a small “thing“.
I was very pleased to have found this site and immediately wrote an email kindly asking for a little further explanation of the “erl”. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a reply but that’s life. Still, I was convinced that the meaning of the Fleckerl in Viennese Waltz was like “things that is danced on the spot”.
Today, the Internet has developed further than at that time, I was able to learn a little deeper:-
“-erl’ is a diminutive, mainly used with nouns and adjectives as an affix to express ‘smallness, and, by extension, cuteness, friendliness, etc.”

「フィガー名の思い出25 フレッカール（Fleckerl）」
社交ダンスを始めて以来、今日までサークルでも個人的にもヴィニーズ・ワルツを踊ったことはありませんが、それでもフレッカールの意味を知りたいと思って調べたことがあります。案外早く分かったのは、フレッカールのフレック（Fleck）はドイツ語で「その場（スポット）、小さなもの」の意味ということでした。
それから何十年も経った2009年に英国のDSI社から出版された”THE IRVINE LEGACY” (Oliver Wessel-Therhorn)にも、
「このフレッカールという言葉はドイツ語のフレックから派生し、意味はスポット（その場）ですから、フレッカールはスポットで踊らなくてはなりません」
と書いてあります。
でも、なぜフレックの説明でフレッカールの説明ではないのでしょう？ 英語圏やドイツ語圏の人たちはすんなり理解できることなのでしょうが、そうした言語の圏外に育った私には納得できなかったため、調査は続きました。
調べ始めてから20年を過ぎた頃だったでしょうか、オーストリアのレストラのサイトに行き当たると、そこには、私がそれまで知らなかったスパゲッティの一種で短くて小さなタイプにフレッカールと言うのが紹介されていました。そしてそれは、「小さな食べもの」の意味であることも書かれていました。大いに喜んだ私は、もう少し詳しく教えて欲しいとメールを書きました。残念ながら返事を頂くことはできませんでしたが、人生とはそんなものです。
それでも、ヴィニーズ・ワルツのフレッカールは、「その場で踊る“もの”」のような意味合いがあると納得できたのですから十分でした。
当時と比べインターネットが一段と発達した今日、もう少し詳しく知ることができました。調べると、
「~アール（-erl）」は指小辞（ししょうじ）で、主に名詞や形容詞につき「小さいこと，さらに，それから転じて，かわいらしいこと，親しみのもてることなどを表わす接辞」
と出てきました。
