Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.
2011年10月からFacebookグループ”Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”に「フィガー名の思い出」という記事を投稿しています。 これらの記事を記録のためにこのHPに残すことにしました。
“Memories of Figure Names No. 12 Tango Hold “
Well, Tango Hold is not a figure name, but ever since I started learning Tango, I have wondered why the hold of ours is so different from that of Argentine Tango – Argentine is the birthplace of the Tango! That big question mark hanging over my head finally disappeared one day, decades later, when I came across an article “The Tango Family Tree” written by Mr. Richard Powers, a dance historian. There, accompanied by an illustration, was the following statement (summary).
“When we compare European and North American tango descriptions to a Buenos Aires tango manual from the same time, we see that the northern hemisphere dancers mostly got it right, dancing the same steps, in the same style, as the Argentines.”
And when I opened the “EL TANGO ARGENTINO” (published in 1916) shown there, the hold illustrated there was almost exactly the same as our Continental Tango holds we dance today. This reassured me, and without hesitation I decided to leave further investigation to the Argentine Tango side. (lol)

今回はフィガー名ではありませんが、タンゴ・ホールについてです。
タンゴを習い始めて以来、なぜ、タンゴ発祥の地のアルゼンチン・タンゴとホールドがまるで違うか不思議に思っていました。私の頭上にまとわりつくその大きな疑問符が消えたのは、それから数十年経過したある日、ダンス歴史家リチャード・パワー氏の記事「The Tango Family Tree」を見つ時でした。そこにはイラストを伴う、次の記載がありました（要約）。
「ヨーロッパと北米のタンゴの解説書を、同時代のブエノスアイレスのタンゴの解説書と比較してみると、北半球のダンサーたちは、ほとんど正しく、アルゼンチンと同じステップ、同じスタイルで踊っていることがわかります。」と。
そこに示された “EL TANGO ARGENTINO”（1916年発行）を開くと、挿絵のホールドは、まさに私たちが踊るコンチネンタル・タンゴのホールドとほとんど同じでした。これで納得した私は、ためらいなく、更なる調査はアルゼンチン・タンゴ側に任せることにしました（笑）。
