Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.

“Memories of Figure Names No. 10 / Appel”
The Appel in Paso Doble has only one step, so I could learn it as easily as everyone else. And it was also easy to guess that its English meaning was “Appeal”. The action of Appel hitting the floor strongly certainly appeals to the people around you, and that was enough to convince myself of the connection between the figure name and the movement.
However, when I bought a booklet decades later, I found a more in-depth historical explanation in it and I like it very much:-
“APPEL: French – literally “call” and since in France after the Concierge had locked up for the night, one gained entry to an apartment block by calling the night-watchman with loud handclap, the noise made by stamping the floor in this step giving a similar sound possibly gave rise to the name.”

パソ・ドブレのアペルは1歩しかありませんので、私にもすぐに覚えることが出来ました。アペルのスペルが英語のアピールに似ていると思って調べてみると、その推測は当たっていました。
確かにアペルで床を強く打ち付けるアクションは周囲の人々にアピールしていますので、フィガー名との関連性はそれで十分納得できたのですが、それから何十年も後に購入した資料には、より踏み込んだ歴史を感じさせる説明があり、私は気に入っています。
“アペルは仏語の「呼びかける」という意味で英語のコール（Call）に相当します。フランスでは、夜になりアパートの管理人が鍵をかけてしまった後、その敷地内に入ろうとするものは大きく手を叩いて夜間警備人に知らせなければいけませんでした。それが床を叩く音に似ているところからアペルの名が使われたと考えられています。
