Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.

“Memories of Figure Names 8 / Rumba Cross”
The Rumba Cross is really a fascinating figure, but what I didn’t really understand when I started dancing was the reason why Rumba is included in its name.
So it was with great pleasure that I came across the following description in the book “THE WORLD OF PHYLLIS HAYLOR AND BALLROOM” (P162).
“The novelty of the Rumba Cross was, of course, the action of turning to the right with the left foot forward and it is probable that the variation owes its ”Latin” name to some similarity between the form of top used in the Carioca–a popular demonstration dance of that era. “
“Whatever the explanation for the name, the Rumba Cross has retained its popularity and may be considered ‘simple’ by modern standards, but without body control, footwork and coordination with a partner it may appear unorganised and unbalanced.”

ルンバ・クロスは魅力的なフィガーですが、ダンスを始めた当時の私が理解できなかったのは踊り方以上にフィガー名にラテンの名前が入っていることでした。ですから、下の説明との出会いは喜び以外の何物でもありませんでした：
「1930年代半ばに現れたとき、その魅力にセンセーションが起きました。ルンバ・クロスの斬新さは左足を前進しながら右回転する点にあります。フィガー名は、当時、デモンストレーション・ダンスとして流行っていたカリオカ（踊りの一種）と頭の使い方に幾分共通性があったところから、ラテン系の名前が付けられたようです。」（出典：THE WORLD OF PHYLLIS HAYLOR AND BALLROOM、P162）
しかし、ヘイラーさんも十分に確信していなかったようで、次の一文が続きます。
「名前の説明がどうであれ、ルンバ・クロスはその人気を保ち、現代の基準からすれば「シンプル」と言えるかもしれませんが、ボディ・コントロール、フットワーク、パートナーとの協調がなければ、整然とせず、アンバランスに見えてしまうかもしれません。」
