Since October 2011, I have been posting articles titled “Memories of Figure Names” on Facebook group “Ballroom & Latin Dancer Memory Lane”. I decided to leave those articles on this HP for record.

“Memory of Figure Names (2) Guapacha Timing”
As soon as I learned how to use “Guapacha timing” in dancing, I looked up the meaning of “Guapacha” on the internet and in dictionaries and even asked musicians, but I couldn’t find the right answer.
One day, about 30 years later, when I asked an Argentine who I met on Facebook, he said, “I understand that they are Colombians, that is, happiness, celebration, and dance.”
So, when I started to look up further from the Colombian language, I finally found the explanation of Guapacha on the website of the Colombian orchestra. It is pasted here.
If future dance textbooks introduce the meaning and/or origin of figure names, I believe it will make the textbooks more attractive and dancers all over the world will certainly benefit such knowledge along with actual dance technique.
「フィガー名の思い出（2）／ワパチャ・タイミング」
ワパチャの意味を求めてインターネットや辞書で調べたり音楽家に聞いたりもしましたが、答えがみつからな30年位が過ぎ去りました。そんなある日、フェイスブックで知り合ったアルゼンチンの人に尋ねると、「私はコロンビア語で幸せ、祝う、踊ることと理解しています」との返事が。
そこでコロンビア語関連から更に調べていくと、コロンビアの楽団のHPの中に次のようなワパチャの説明を見つけました ― 「ワパチャには幾つかの意味があり、ラテン･アメリカンの多くの国々では”可愛い”、”友好的な”の意味で使われているが、他にも、”ハッピー”、”広い心の”などの意味もある」とあり、非常に納得できました。
今後のダンス教本がフィガー名などの意味や由来も紹介して下さると、世界中のダンサーたちが知識の恩恵にあずかると思います。
